Trained by James Cummings, Hartnell is a former import and a champion racehorse with three Group I victories, having competed at the highest level for many years. As a consistent competitor against the legendary Winx over several seasons, Hartnell proved that he was still in top form when he claimed the Group I C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at the start of the 2018 Melbourne autumn carnival. That victory added to his previous Group I wins, including the 2016 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and the 2015 The BMW at Rosehill. Hartnell is approaching the $5 million mark in career earnings and typically performs best when given fresh campaigns. However, a significant letdown came during the 2017 Melbourne.
