Almandin
About
Almandin, the 2016 winner of the Melbourne Cup, is regarded as one of Australia’s leading stayers, particularly excelling in races over 2400 meters and beyond. Originally bred in Germany, he was brought to Australia by prominent Victorian owner Lloyd Williams. After spending over two years sidelined due to a tendon injury, Almandin made a successful comeback in 2016 under the guidance of trainer Robert Hickmott and jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
In 2017, Almandin returned to compete in the Melbourne Cup with Frankie Dettori riding, but he finished 12th behind Rekindling, another horse owned by Williams, at Flemington. His Australian racing record also includes wins in the Listed Harry White.
